Shared familial risk factors between autism spectrum disorder and obesity – A register‐based familial coaggregation cohort study
Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Dec 14, 2021
Ahlberg R, Garcia-Argibay M, Hirvikoski T, et al. - Meta-analyses suggest that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with obesity. In this study, this association was stratified on intellectual disability (ID). Further, an examination was performed to determine the potential role of shared familial liability in order to determine possible shared etiological factors.
Several Swedish nationwide registers were linked identifying a cohort of 3,141,696 individuals.
Among these individuals, 35,461 individuals were diagnosed with ASD and 61,784 individuals were obese.
Risk for obesity appeared higher for individuals with ASD + ID and ASD−ID when compared with individuals without ASD.
Relatives of the individuals with ASD are also noted to be at increased risk for obesity.
Males vs females appeared to be at somewhat higher risk.
