Sexually transmitted infections in association with area-level prostitution and drug-related arrests

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Jun 29, 2021

Magee LA, Fortenberry JD, Nelson T, et al. - Researchers herein analyzed justice and public health STI/HIV data in Marion County (Indianapolis), Indiana, during an 18-year period, with the aim to determine the mediators and moderators of area-level prostitution arrests and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Numbers of prostitution arrests were noted to be positively linked with area-level STI rates. When accounting for drug-related arrests, a dose-response relationship was observed between prostitution arrests and STI rates. Consideration should be given to these findings when outreaching these areas to expand the efforts to include harm reduction and HIV/STI testing for both sex workers and individuals experiencing substance use disorder. The data further suggest the relevance of greater collaboration in public health and policing efforts to account for overlapping epidemics that engage both health and legal interventions.
