Sexual orientation and adolescent suicide attempt and self‐harm: A co‐twin control study

Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Sep 18, 2020

O'Reilly LM, Pettersson E, Donahue K, et al. - Using the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden and employing a co‐twin control design, researchers here examined the extent to which the correlation between sexual orientation and adolescent suicide attempt and self‐harm (SA/SH) was independent of genetic and environmental factors shared by twins, as well as estimated symptoms of childhood psychopathology. After adjusting unmeasured genetic and environmental factors shared by twins and for childhood psychopathology, nearly 50% elevated odds of SA/SH were evident in adolescence in relation to identifying as a sexual minority. Results thereby support that risk for SA/SH increases in correlation with environmental factors specifically linked with identifying as a sexual minority. This emphasizes the necessity to monitor suicidality risk among this group.
