Sexual behaviour and incidence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men using daily and event-driven pre-exposure prophylaxis in AMPrEP: 2 year results from a demonstration study
The Lancet HIV Jul 05, 2019
Hoornenborg E, et al. - Researchers determined the incidence of HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and sexual behavior following daily and event-driven pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) receipt by 367 eligible participants in a demonstration study (AMPrEP). Daily PrEP was opted for by 269 (73%) of 367 participants and event-driven PrEP by 98 (27%) participants at enrolment. They found that during 2 years of PrEP use, there was no shift in the overall incidence of STIs, but a higher incidence of STIs was reported among participants using daily PrEP vs those using event-driven PrEP, which could be attributed to differences in sexual behavior. STI prevention interventions need to be personalized according to behavioral profiles.
