Sex-specific differences in outcome of transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Apr 19, 2018
Kaier K, et al. - Whether gender differentially impacts in-hospital outcomes after transfemoral (TF-TAVR), transapical (TA-TAVR) or surgical (SAVR) aortic valve replacement was investigated in a nationwide cohort (N=64,794). Because they were generally older and had a higher EuroSCORE, females were preferentially treated with TF-TAVR, whereas the share of TF-TAVR and SAVR was similar in males. Females had a higher risk for bleeding, but lower risk for stroke, mechanical ventilation, and TF-TAVR mortality. Outcomes may be improved by understanding these differences and their basis.
