Sex-specific associations of obesity and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels in the general population
European Journal of Heart Failure Jun 15, 2018
Suthahar N, et al. - Researchers used participants (50.1% females) from the Prevention of REnal and Vascular ENd-stage Disease (PREVEND) cohort to determine the sex-specific correlations between obesity and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels among adults in the general population. Compared with females, they noted a more complex association between obesity and natriuretic peptides in males. Among females, those with abdominal obesity exhibited decreased natriuretic peptide. The link between NT-proBNP levels and obesity was strongly confounded by age. In males vs in females, significantly higher age-associated increases in NT-proBNP were detected.
