Sex-specific association of tinnitus with suicide attempts
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jul 24, 2019
Lugo A, et al. – Given that case series studies have shown the association of severe tinnitus with suicide, researchers ascertained if men and women differ in this association using data from the Stockholm Public Health Cohort (SPHC). In all, 3.4% of the study sample reported having attempted suicide among, and 22.5% of respondents reported having any tinnitus, 2.8% had serious tinnitus, and a specialist had diagnosed 2.1% with tinnitus. Thus, investigators demonstrated a sex-dependent tinnitus connection with suicide attempts, with serious tinnitus linked to female but not male suicide attempts. Since a specialist has diagnosed only one-fifth of participants with severe tinnitus, the authors emphasized the need for increased resources in clinical practice to manage tinnitus. Additional research is also needed to understand the differences in pathophysiology between men and women with tinnitus.
