Sex hormones and measures of kidney function in the diabetes prevention program outcomes study
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Mar 07, 2019
Kim C, et al. - In the secondary analysis of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and its follow-up observational study, researchers estimated the relationship between endogenous sex hormones and kidney function in candidates without chronic kidney disease (CKD). They recorded mean (SD) estimated glomerular filtration ratio (eGFR), 94 (15) mL/min/1.73 m2; and the median albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR), 4.5 (3.3 to 7.6) mg/g at randomization. They also noted incident albuminuria in 187 men and 263 women whereas 136 males and 123 females had incident low eGFR. They concluded no relationship between sex steroids and albuminuria or development of low eGFR. An association between higher sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) level and reduced risk of low eGFR on at least one measurement was noted among males.
