Sex differences in the association of APOE ε4 genotype with longitudinal hippocampal atrophy among cognitively normal older people
European Journal of Neurology May 23, 2019
Shen S, et al. - In this investigation, researchers identified how longitudinal change in adjusted hippocampal volume (hippocampal volume/intracranial volume ratio [HpVR]) across the Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum is impacted by Apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE ε4) genotype and sex jointly. They involved 372 people with normal cognition (NC), 738 people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 271 patients with mild AD from the database of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. In cognitively normal older adults, but not MCI or AD, female APOE ε4 carriers exhibit a greater longitudinal decrease of HpVR vs their male counterparts.
