Sex differences in national rates of repair of emergency abdominal aortic aneurysm
British Journal of Surgery Nov 11, 2018
Aber A, et al. - Researchers examined the sex differences in both the rate and type of repair for emergency abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in England via analyzing hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data sets from April 2002 to February 2015. Emergency surgical intervention was done on 15,717 patients (83·3% men) for ruptured AAA and 10,276 (81·2% men) for intact AAA. This suggests less tendency of women who present as an emergency with an AAA to undergo repair than men. Differences in age and co-morbidities may partially explain this but the differences persist after case-mix adjustment.
