Sex and race differences in pain sensitization among patients with chronic low back pain
The Journal of Pain Jul 20, 2018
Meints SM, et al. - Race and sex differences were examined in pain sensitivity in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). In deep muscle and mechanical punctate pain, race and sex differences were identified. Females required less pressure to produce deep muscle pain and rated mechanical punctate pain as more painful vs males. Black patients demonstrated greater pain sensitivity for measures of deep muscle hyperalgesia and mechanical punctate pain vs non-Hispanic White (NHW) patients. In addition, researchers identified the role of catastrophizing as a contributor to such race differences.
