Sex and gender disparities in the management and outcomes of acute myocardial infarction–cardiogenic shock in older adults
Mayo Clinic Proceedings Sep 04, 2020
Vallabhajosyula S, Vallabhajosyula S, Dunlay SM, et al. - Researchers examined if outcomes in older adults with cardiogenic shock complicating acute myocardial infarction (AMI-CS) are influenced by gender. Using the National Inpatient Sample, they identified 134,501 AMI-CS admissions [75 years or older; 51.5% (n = 69,220) women] during January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2014. Relative to older men, older women had lower use of coronary angiography, PCI, MCS, mechanical ventilation, and hemodialysis. Outcomes suggest independent predictive value of female gender for worse in-hospital outcomes in older adults with AMI-CS in the United States.
