Sex and gender aspects on intensive care: A cohort study
Journal of Critical Care Nov 01, 2019
Zettersten E, et al. - Researchers determined if and how intensive care unit (ICU) admission and discharge patterns are influenced by patient gender. The main focus was laid on the alterations in length of stay and the likelihood of ICU discharge and 30- and 90-day mortality in correlation with patient gender in this retrospective cohort analysis involving 8,598 adult patients who were admitted between 2006 and 2016 to a university hospital ICU in Stockholm, Sweden. This study included overall 8,598 patients, 37% were women. An equal length of stay was observed between women and men patients who were part of this large cohort study of critically ill patients. However, a significantly higher likelihood of being discharged was noted in women. Mortality did not differ between women and men.
