Sex- and age-based differences in the natural history and outcome of dilated cardiomyopathy
European Journal of Heart Failure Jun 15, 2018
Halliday BP, et al. - The relationship between sex, age and outcome in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) was determined using proportional hazard modeling. Observations revealed that compared to men, women with DCM showed better survival. Less severe left ventricular dysfunction and a smaller scar burden could partly explain the finding. In patients >60 years, researchers identified an increased mortality driven by non-sudden death that was seen less in women. Favorable outcomes were achieved with contemporary treatment with a low rate of sudden death.
