Severe outcomes associated with respiratory viruses in newborns and infants: A prospective viral surveillance study in Jordan
BMJ Open Jun 03, 2018
Khuri-Bulos N, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, the researchers evaluated virus-specific hospitalisation rates, risk factors for illness severity and seasonal trends in children hospitalised with acute respiratory infections (ARI). From 16 March 2010 to 31 March 2013, children under 2 years of age hospitalised with fever and/or respiratory symptoms were included. In Jordanian children hospitalised with ARI, respiratory viruses were associated with severe illness. Extended breastfeeding, increased access to palivizumab and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine development was the prevention strategies which could help in decrease hospitalisation rates and illness severity, especially in young children with underlying medical conditions.
