Severe hypoglycaemia, mild cognitive impairment, dementia and brain volumes in older adults with type 2 diabetes: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort study
Diabetologia - Clinical and Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism Aug 07, 2018
Lee AK, et al. - In older adults with type 2 diabetes, experts assessed the connection between severe hypoglycemia and domain-specific cognitive decline, smaller brain volumes and dementia by analyzing data of study participants diagnosed with diabetes from the community-based Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. A strong association was found between severe hypoglycemia and poor cognitive outcomes. A history of severe hypoglycemia was associated with dementia vs normal cognitive status (OR 2.34). For high-risk older adults, discussions about appropriate diabetes treatments are needed.
