Severe and malignant hypertension are common in primary atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome
Kidney International Jun 05, 2019
Cavero T, et al. - Among patients with primary atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) (n=55), researchers determined the frequency and severity of hypertension. Including all patients, a genetic analysis was performed. All the patients with Grades 2 and 3 hypertension were asked to undergo funduscopic examination. As controls, they included cases (n=110) with malignant hypertension induced by diseases other than aHUS. They found Grade 2 or Grade 3 hypertension was present in 36 patients with aHUS and malignant hypertension was evident in 19 on funduscopic examination. Among patients with aHUS, the finding of severe and malignant hypertension was common. A higher renal survival was reported in relation to eculizumab treatment vs plasmapheresis. However, patients having malignant hypertension caused by diseases other than aHUS developed thrombotic microangiopathy uncommonly.
