Serum uric acid levels threshold for mortality in diabetic individuals: The URic acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) project
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Feb 05, 2022
In this study, serum uric acid (SUA) thresholds previously suggested by the URRAH (URic acid Right for heArt Health) study group were shown to be predictive of total and cardiovascular (CV) mortality also in individuals with diabetes.
As proposed by the URRAH Study, cut-off values of SUA predictive of total mortality and CV mortality are 4.7 mg/dl and 5.6 mg/dl, respectively.
A total of 2,570 diabetics from the URRAH were analyzed, and 744 deaths occurred in this population during a median follow-up of 107 months.
Multivariate Cox regression analyses adjusted for several confounders revealed higher risk of total (HR: 1.23) and CV mortality (HR:1.31) in participants with SUA ≥ 5.6 mg/dl vs those with SUA < 5.6 mg/dl.
In those with SUA ≥ 4.7mg/dl, all-cause mortality risk was elevated than those with SUA below 4.7 mg/dl, but this was not statistically significant post-adjustment for all confounders.
