Serum uric acid levels as an indicator for metabolically unhealthy obesity in children and adolescents
Hormone Research in Paediatrics Aug 01, 2018
Rocha EPAA, et al. - Amongst overweight and obese children and adolescents, researchers identified potential clinical and metabolic indicators that might help to distinguish between metabolically healthy and unhealthy individuals via analyzing data of 246 overweight/obese and 212 normal-weight individuals who enlisted in the LIFE Child study, aged between 6 and 18 years. Data reported that nearly one-third of overweight/obese children were already identified as metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Findings revealed that serum levels of uric acid (UA) could be used as an indicator of unhealthy obesity in youth. They found that lower levels of UA show a lower risk and higher levels suggest a higher risk of MUO.
