Serum serotonin levels in patients with epileptic seizures

Epilepsia May 23, 2018

Murugesan A, et al. - Study authors attempted to examine epileptic seizure–induced changes in serum serotonin levels and whether there are potential implications for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). The results of this study revealed that the change in serotonin (postictal-interictal) was inversely associated with a shorter duration of tonic phase of generalized seizures. They reported that the interictal serotonin level was inversely associated with a shorter period of postictal generalized electroencephalographic suppression. Based on the findings, they suggested that peripheral serum serotonin levels could play a role in seizure features and earlier postseizure recovery
