Serum phosphate and the risk of new-onset hyperuricemia in hypertensive patients
Hypertension May 21, 2019
Cao J, et al. - In this post hoc analysis of the Uric Acid substudy of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial, researchers primarily assessed the link between serum phosphate and the risk of new-onset hyperuricemia in hypertensive patients. They also investigated any possible effect modifiers. Overall 10,612 subjects who had normal uric acid levels (< 357 μmol/L [6 mg/dL]) were examined at baseline. The investigators noted a significant inverse link between serum phosphate and the risk of new-onset hyperuricemia. In subjects in quartile 4 (≥ 1.4 mmol/L) vs those in quartile 1 (< 1.2 mmol/L) of serum phosphate quartiles, the observed risk of new-onset hyperuricemia was significantly lower. Both males and females demonstrated similar results.
