Serum neurofilament light is increased in multiple system atrophy of cerebellar type and in repeat-expansion spinocerebellar ataxias: A pilot study
Journal of Neurology May 11, 2018
Wilke C, et al. - Researchers investigated if serum neurofilament light (NfL) could offer a promising peripheral blood biomarker in degenerative ataxias. A notable rise was found in NfL in spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) patients vs controls, including NfL increases in SCA1 and SCA3. Hence, first proof-of-concept was obtained regarding NfL as a promising peripheral biomarker in degenerative ataxias, supporting the differentiation of multiple system atrophy of cerebellar type from sporadic adult-onset ataxia, and hinting towards neuronal damage in repeat-expansion SCAs.
