Serum metabolites associate with lipid phenotypes among Bogalusa Heart Study participants
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jan 30, 2020
Gu X, Li C, He J, et al. - Researchers performed this study with the Bogalusa Heart Study participants, to define metabolites and metabolite modules displaying a new link with lipids, given dyslipidemia acts as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. For this purpose, untargeted metabolomics was used. Bonferroni-significance, p < 1.04×10-5, was achieved by 13 metabolites with known biochemical identities displaying novel association, and these metabolites demonstrated consistent effect directions in both whites and African-Americans. Twelve belonged to lipid sub-pathways including fatty acid metabolism, monohydroxy fatty acids, and lysoplasmalogens. In both whites and African-Americans, Bonferroni-significance, p < 1.39×10-3, was achieved by four metabolite modules. Metabolites from lipid sub-pathways to a large extent constituted these four modules, with one module including metabolites not identified in the single metabolite analyses. Overall, 13 metabolites and 4 metabolite modules demonstrating novel association with lipids were discovered in this study.
