Serum melatonin concentration in critically ill patients randomized to sedation or non-sedation
Annals of Intensive Care Mar 16, 2021
Oxlund J, Knudsen T, Strøm T, et al. - Researchers assessed the melatonin level in critically ill patients randomized to sedation or non-sedation and examined the correlation with delirium. This analysis was completed by 79 patients, including 41 sedated and 38 non-sedated. The inquiry was performed as a sub-study to the NON-SEDA study wherein 100 consecutive patients were randomly assigned to sedation or non-sedation with a daily wake-up call (50 in each arm). Findings showed that sedated, critically ill patients had suppressed melatonin concentration relative to non-sedated controls and increased frequency of delirium was observed in sedated patients.
