Serum klotho is inversely associated with metabolic syndrome in chronic kidney disease: Results from the KNOW-CKD study

BMC Nephrology Apr 06, 2019

Kim HJ, et al. - Researchers examined the link between serum klotho levels and metabolic syndrome (MS) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) by analyzing baseline cross-sectional data extracted from a large Korean CKD cohort. They studied data from 1,754 subjects recruited in the KoreaN Cohort Study for Outcome in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-CKD) between 2011 and 2016, after exclusion of 484 patients due to non-availability of data on serum klotho and extreme klotho values (values lower than the detectable range or > 6,000 pg/mL) and having autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. The revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP-ATP) III criteria were used to define MS. By means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, serum klotho levels were determined. Findings revealed an inverse and independent association of serum klotho with the presence of MS in patients with CKD.
