Serum interleukin-6 level in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Journal of Child Neurology Dec 14, 2018
Darwish AH, et al. - Researchers analyzed the level of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) as a predictor of the immunologic status in 60 children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, and to study its association with severity of symptoms and 60 control children to complete history taking, clinical examination, and psychometric tests. They measured serum IL-6 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A significantly increased level of IL-6 was recorded in ADHD cases (22.35) compared to controls (5.44). They observed no association between serum IL-6 level and either the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) or the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale score. There might be considered a role of increased production of IL-6 in the pathogenesis of ADHD.
