Serum IL8 is not associated with cardiovascular events but with all-cause mortality
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Feb 08, 2019
Velásquez IM, et al. - In a cohort of 60 years old men and women from Stockholm (60YO, comprising 4,232 participants), researchers investigated the correlation of interleukin 8 (IL8) levels with incident cardiovascular (CV) events (CVE) and mortality (all-cause, CV, and cancer). They determined deaths and incident CVE by matching the cohort annually to population registries. They recorded serum IL8 in 4011 participants and categorized in quartiles. They estimated the CVE and mortality risk, expressed as hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI), by using Cox proportional hazard models. Traditional CV risk factors (CVE estimates) and sex, life style habits, metabolic factors (mortality estimates) were adjusted to address potential confounding. A follow-up of 16.5 years was performed, during which, 522 incident CVE and death of 647 study participants were reported. Findings revealed no association of elevated IL8 levels with CVE risk and CV mortality. However, elevated IL8 levels were found to be related to an increased risk of all-cause mortality irrespective of the underlying cause.
