Serum copper and zinc levels at diagnosis and hepatocellular carcinoma survival in the Guangdong Liver Cancer Cohort
International Journal of Cancer Apr 17, 2019
Fang AP, et al. - In this prospective cohort study with 989 patients with incident hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), researchers assessed HCC survival in relation to serum levels of copper, zinc and their ratio (copper/zinc) at diagnosis. They used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine serum copper and zinc. The outcomes of interest were liver cancer-specific survival and overall survival. The estimation of multivariable hazard ratios and 95% confidence interval was done using Cox proportional hazards models. While no link between serum zinc levels and HCC survival was found, worse HCC survival may be correlated with higher serum copper and copper relative to zinc levels (ie, higher copper/zinc ratio).
