Serum bile acid levels before and after sleeve gastrectomy and their correlation with obesity-related comorbidities

Obesity Surgery May 11, 2019

De Vuono S, et al. - Researchers studied 79 sleeve gastrectomy (SG) candidates (27 males, 52 females, aged 45 ± 12 years, mean body mass index 45 ± 7 kg/m2) for circulating bile acid (BA) patterns. Further, they compared these patterns to metabolic and vascular parameters before and after SG. Glucose metabolism and particularly markers of insulin-resistance were noted influencing serum BA. Modification in circulating BA pool size and composition was noted following SG. Before SG, insulin-resistant obese subjects showed higher primary and secondary BA levels than non-insulin resistant obese, and there was a positive correlation of BA with the markers of insulin-resistance. After SG, a significant decrease in total (conjugated and unconjugated) cholic acids, and a significant increase in total lithocholic acids was observed. They noted the association of SG-induced BA changes with insulin-resistance amelioration.
