Serum and urine interleukin-17A levels as biomarkers of disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus

International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Jun 14, 2019

Nordin F, et al. - Researchers examined how serum and urine interleukin-17A (IL-17A) levels are associated with disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In addition, they evaluated their sensitivity and specificity as biomarkers of disease activity in SLE. In this cross-sectional study of 120 SLE patients from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC), they noted positive correlations of serum and urine IL-17A with SLE disease activity. However, both of these were neither sensitive nor specific as biomarkers to predict active disease. Hence, suggesting no role of IL-17 measurement in SLE disease activity assessments.
