Serum albumin concentration as an independent prognostic indicator in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension

Clinical Cardiology May 23, 2018

Snipelisky D, et al. - Researchers tested the hypothesis that serum albumin concentrations are a predictor of outcomes in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), by retrospectively examining all patients with World Health Organization group 1 PAH evaluated between March 2001 and August 2008. Patients were stratified into groups based on serum albumin concentration ≤3.3 g/dL (hypoalbuminemia) vs >3.3 g/dL. Lower serum albumin concentrations were found to be related to higher mortality and can serve as a marker of disease severity in this patient population. The following were identified as independent predictors of mortality: low albumin levels, high right atrial systolic area, low Fick-derived cardiac index, and high New York Heart Association functional class.
