Serum 25 hydroxy vitamin d levels in very low birth weight infants receiving oral vitamin d supplementation
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Apr 11, 2018
Munshi UK, et al. - Experts assessed the efficacy and safety of vitamin D supplementation in preterm infants as recommended by American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) via 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) levels as a marker of vitamin D status of very low birth weight infants while on vitamin D supplementation during neonatal intensive care unit hospitalization. Findings suggested that at 4 weeks of age, 80% of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) and VLBW infants either had deficient or insufficient vitamin D status. Vitamin D levels were seen to be improved with vitamin D supplementation, significantly more in VLBW infants than ELBW infants. Recommendation of AAP appeared to be safe, nonetheless, while using higher supplement dosing, 25OHD level ought to be monitored for avoiding high and very high vitamin D levels.
