Sentinel lymph node biopsy was associated with favorable survival outcomes for patients with clinically node-negative Asian melanoma
Cancer Management and Research Nov 26, 2019
Chang JWC, Huang YL, Chang YY, et al. - Researchers looked at the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in Taiwanese melanoma patients, and especially in patients with acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM). This study included patients who had primary surgery followed by either SLNB or nodal observation at the Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (January 2000 to December 2011). The clinicopathological features and survival results of the participants were retrospectively examined. This analysis involved 209 patients. Of these, SLNB was performed in 127 patients and 51 underwent nodal observation only post-primary surgery. Findings revealed favorable outcomes in relation to SLNB in patients with clinically node-negative cutaneous melanoma, especially in Taiwanese patients with ALM, Breslow thickness ≤ 2 mm, and nonulcerated melanoma.
