Sentinel lymph node biopsy for high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
The Laryngoscope Mar 16, 2019
Wu MP, et al. - In 83 participants, authors assessed outcomes of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. They found 6% of cases had a sentinel node positive for tumor. Among those five patients, four were given additional treatment like neck dissection, radiation, and/or systemic therapy, and had no extra recurrence at the last follow-up. They determined SLNB was effective in the identification of regional lymph node metastases in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck and had a high negative predictive value of 95%-100%. Tumor being locally recurrent at presentation, arising from an area of chronic inflammation, and immunosuppression were factors correlated with recurrence of the disease.
