Sensitivity of initial thoracentesis for malignant pleural effusion stratified by tumor type in patients with strong evidence of metastatic disease
Respiration Jul 22, 2018
Grosu HB, et al. - Among consecutive patients with a solid tumor malignancy with proven or strong suspicion for metastatic disease with new pleural effusions that underwent an initial thoracentesis, researchers investigated the sensitivity of thoracentesis with pleural fluid cytology stratified by tumor type. Included patients were only those with metastatic disease. Findings revealed that based on the type of tumor, thoracentesis displayed significantly varied sensitivity for solid tumors. In those with sarcomas, head and neck malignancies, and renal cell cancers, the lowest sensitivity of thoracentesis was observed, while the highest was seen in breast and pancreatic cancers.
