Sensitivity and positive predictive value of the registration of self-expanding metal stent treatment for obstructive colorectal cancer in two Danish nationwide registries
Clinical Epidemiology Oct 17, 2018
Avlund TH, et al. - Researchers assessed if the quality of the coding of self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) procedures in Danish medical databases allows for population-based nationwide studies by comparing the registration of SEMS procedures among obstructive colorectal cancer patients in the Danish National Patient Register (DNPR) and the Danish Colorectal Cancer Group (DCCG) database to the registration in a prospective SEMS database (the reference standard) from March 1, 2010 through December 31, 2013. Findings revealed high positive predictive value and sensitivity of SEMS coding in the DNPR, supporting the use of these data in future research. The DCCG database had high PPV but low sensitivity of SEMS data. This suggests that caution should be practiced when using data on SEMS treatment from this database.
