Sensation of incomplete bladder emptying in women: Lack of correlation to an elevated post-void residual
Neurourology and Urodynamics Dec 24, 2021
Van Kuiken M, Volkin D, Ardines KZ, et al. - Women with lower urinary tract symptoms commonly experience sensation of incomplete bladder emptying (SIBE). Despite reporting more voiding symptoms, women with SIBE were more bothered by storage symptoms. Importantly, the majority of these females emptied their bladder well and did not exhibit a greater likelihood to have an elevated post-void residual (PVR) vs females without SIBE.
In this study of 95 women aged ≥18 with lower urinary tract symptoms, it was investigated whether SIBE was correlated with an elevated PVR and association of SIBE to other lower urinary tract symptoms was examined.
Of participants, 59% reported SIBE, and females experiencing SIBE reported more urinary hesitancy, intermittency, weak stream, dysuria, and straining, vs women without SIBE.
However, no difference in elevated PVRs was seen between those with and without SIBE.
All participants, irrespective of SIBE, experienced higher bother from storage and incontinence symptoms vs voiding symptoms with no difference in overall bother scores.
