Self-reported physical activity and atrial fibrillation risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Heart Rhythm Dec 23, 2020
Mishima RS, Verdicchio CV, Noubiap JJ, et al. - Researchers examined the relevant evidence regarding the link between physical activity (PA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) risk. They explored PubMed and Embase databases to identify prospective cohort investigations describing the risk of AF related to a specific PA volume until March 2020. The documented risk was normalized to metabolic equivalent of task-minutes per week (MET-minutes per week). They finally studied data from 15 studies with 1,464,539 individuals (median age 55.3 years, 51.7 % of female). Findings revealed that a significantly lower AF risk was observed in relation to PA at guideline recommended levels and above. However, the benefit was less obvious at 2000 MET-minutes per week and beyond.
