Self-reported history of concussions is associated with risk factors for suicide completion among middle school students: A cross-sectional study
Journal of Psychiatric Research Oct 26, 2020
Mantey DS, et al. - Using state-level data from the 2017 YRBS, researchers conducted the first study investigating the correlation between self-reported history of concussion and risk factors for completed suicide among middle school students. In the study sample of 19,254 middle school students from 7 States (Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Virginia), nearly 17.8% self-reported a history of concussion. Analysis revealed significant association of self-reported history of concussion with greater odds for history of suicidal ideation, planned suicide attempt, and past suicide attempt. Research findings were similar to those from study conducted among high school students and young adults.
