Selenium, copper, zinc and hypertension: An analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011–2016)
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Feb 07, 2020
Bastola MM, et al. - To inquire about the role of trace elements, including selenium, copper, and zinc, in hypertension, researchers analyzed data from NHANES participants (n = 6,683) from 2011 to 2016. They investigated the role of trace elements in hypertension in the age range 8 to 80 years, regardless of the antihypertensive medication received. They found a positive link between serum selenium and hypertension, regardless of age or antihypertensive medications consumed. Based on these revelations, the reference levels of serum levels in healthy people may require to be re-determined, if supported by additional investigations. If confirmed, patients suffering from hypertension may also need to be warned concerning selenium consumption.
