Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Dec 02, 2018
Van Hemelrijck M, et al. - Researchers performed this cross-sectional study on 1,420 men aged 20 years or older who participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) between 1988 and 1994, to determine the link between serum selenium and serum concentrations of sex steroid hormones including estradiol, given a potential inverse association between selenium levels and prostate cancer risk has been reported in recent findings from pooled studies. The ultimate goal was to investigate one mechanism by which selenium could impact prostate cancer risk. According to findings, a possible mechanism by which selenium could be protective for prostate cancer was associated with estrogen. There were no associations evident for the other sex steroid hormones studied.
