Selective laser trabeculoplasty vs eye drops for first-line treatment of ocular hypertension and glaucoma (LiGHT): A multicentre randomised controlled trial
The Lancet Apr 18, 2019
Gazzard G, et al. - Because primary open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension are usually treated with eye drops that lower intraocular pressure, researchers compared selective laser trabeculoplasty with eye drops for first-line treatment of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. They recruited 718 subjects in this study, of these, 356 underwent selective laser trabeculoplasty and 362 received eye drops. According to this observer-masked, randomised controlled trial, they recommend offering selective laser trabeculoplasty as a first-line treatment for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. In terms of cost-effectiveness, initial selective laser trabeculoplasty was more cost-efficacious vs the conventional treatment pathway, where medication is used from the outset, with no significant difference in health-related quality of life and clinical results.
