Selective laser trabeculoplasty in exfoliative glaucoma eyes with prior argon laser trabeculoplasty
Acta Ophthalmologica Jan 31, 2020
Ilveskosk L, et al. - Via performing a single-center trial including 47 patients (47 eyes) [age: 79.3 ± 7.6 years (mean ± SD); 15 males and 32 females] with uncontrolled exfoliative glaucoma, researchers investigated the efficacy of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) within eyes with exfoliative glaucoma and history of prior argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT). Reduction from the preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) by 20% and 2 mmHg (< 12 mmHg), 3 mmHg (12-16 mmHg) or 4 mmHg (> 16 mmHg) depending on the baseline IOP defined the treatment success. The overall success rate was 50% and 42% at 3 months and 9 months, respectively. Achievement of the cut-off level for treatment success was observed at both 3 and 9 months when preoperative IOP was 18 mmHg and above. They identified no correlation of IOP lowering effect of SLT with the number of glaucoma drugs, age, gender or use of prostaglandin inhibitors. Outcomes thereby suggest selective laser trabeculoplasty as a safe and noteworthy treatment option for reducing IOP in exfoliative glaucoma eyes, particularly with pre-SLT IOP over 18 mmHg.
