Selective duodenography for controlled first-pass bolus distention of the duodenum in neonates and young children with bile-stained vomiting
Clinical Radiology Feb 09, 2018
Andronikou S, et al. - This study was carried out in order to comparatively analyze the “selective duodenograms” performed via nasogastric tubes advanced into the proximal duodenum vs traditional contrast studies regarding visualization of a first-pass bolus distention of the duodenum and frequency of inconclusive results in neonates and young children with bile-stained vomiting. In neonates, duodenum was demonstrated with 100% success, with considerably more frequent first-pass bolus visualisation and duodenal distention via the “selective duodenogram” technique than traditional studies. A significant diagnostic conundrum was yielded in the emergency setting due to the 5 (7%) inconclusive traditional studies, since emergency surgery required contemplation without proof.
