Selected risk factors for atherosclerosis in children and their parents with positive family history of premature cardiovascular diseases: A prospective study

BMC Pediatrics Apr 09, 2018

Pac-Kozuchowska E, et al. - The serum parameters of lipid metabolism, homocysteine, soluble adhesion molecules and common carotid artery wall thickness were comprehensively analyzed in children from families with early symptoms of atherosclerosis. Researchers discovered inverse associations between birthweight, cord blood concentrations of triglycerides (TG), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (Apo B) during the first stage of the study. Substantially higher serum concentrations of TG, VLDL cholesterol and lipoprotein A (Lp(a)) were noted in children from families with a history for premature coronary artery disease (CAD) during the second stage. It was deduced that serum Lp(a) possibly served as a maker of cardiovascular risk in children and adolescents.
