Seizure severity is correlated with severity of hypoxic ischemic injury in abusive head trauma
Pediatric Neurology Dec 17, 2017
Dingman AL, et al. - A retrospective study was performed to identify hypoxic ischemic injury (HII) and seizures in abusive head trauma (AHT). Among children with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) from AHT, electrographic seizures were common. Thus, children with suspected AHT ought to be monitored with continuous electroencephalograms (cEEGs). An association was found between the severity of hypoxic-ischemic brain with the severity of seizures. Evidence of HII on magnetic resonance image (MRI) could evolve over time. Children with high seizure burden, therefore, needed to be re-imaged to assess for evolving HII.
