Seizure-recurrence risk in persons with epilepsy undergoing antiepileptic drug tapering
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Oct 27, 2019
Kumar S, et al. - In this prospective observational independent assessor based study, researchers evaluated the risk of seizure recurrence in persons with epilepsy (PWE) undergoing antiepileptic drug (AED) tapering over a follow up period of minimum 19 months, as well as explored the association of seizure recurrence with tapering pattern variables and risk factors for seizure recurrence. According to results, seizure-recurrence was reported in 119 PWE with a minimum 19 (maximum 41 months) follow up. Findings revealed that there is a wide variation in the tapering pattern of AEDs and risk of seizure-recurrence can be minimized by taking into account risk factors such as the history of smoking/alcoholic/tobacco, longer duration of epilepsy, frequency of seizures before control and previously failed tapering.
