Seizure and status epilepticus in chronic subdural hematoma
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica May 24, 2019
Won SY, et al. - Among 375 patients diagnosed with chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) between 2010 and 2017, researchers assessed the incidence, predictors of acute symptomatic seizure (ASz)/status epilepticus (SE) and outcomes in this retrospective analysis. Data reported that the incidence of ASz was 15.2% and of SE it was 1.9%. In the follow-up period, late seizures occurred in 3.8%. Outcomes revealed that any patient with SE had an unfavorable discharge result without any follow-up improvement with a mortality rate of 14.2%. According to findings, GCS≤13 in patients with cSDH upon admission, remote stroke, and recurrent hematoma are independent predictors for ASz/SE. A routine pre- and postoperative EEG is recommended in addition to CT due to the higher seizure rate vs recurrence rate.
