Critical Care Medicine Sep 24, 2017
Schneider JB, et al. - This study provides information regarding sedation management in children supported on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for acute respiratory failure. In this patient population, an association was seen between initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support and deep sedation, substantial sedative exposure, and increased frequency of iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome, respectively. These impacts might be mitigated via a standardized, goal-directed, nurse-driven sedation protocol.
