Osteoporosis International Aug 21, 2019
Driessen JHM, Vestergaard P, Abtahi S, et al. - Through a series of cross-sectional analyses that used the Danish National Health Service Register of individuals 50+ adults in the full country Denmark with a major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) between 1995 and 2010, experts examined the incidence rates (IRs) of MOF. For the whole population, a general drop was noted in IRs of MOF, which was more noticeable among women. In hip fracture rates among women and men, respectively, 31% and 19% of decrease was discovered. The trend in clinical vertebral fracture was slightly declining for women and rising for men. The women-to-men rate ratio of MOF declined significantly from 2.93 to 2.72 during study period. Thus, decreasing trends in MOF and hip fracture for both genders were noted. Nevertheless, among men, a lower rate of reduction of hip fracture and a rising trend in vertebral fracture was seen. Acknowledging the observations and the major economic burden that accompanies this devastating disease, more concentration should be on the MOF, particularly in men.
